A registered and chartered engineer is an individual who has proven their expertise in a particular field. They are subject to a rigorous competency assessment by the panel of Engineering New Zealand. By passing this bar, they are registered as a professional engineer and given the legal ability to use the CPEng in their title.

When a builder cannot identify the issue, they refer to a building surveyor.
When a building surveyor cannot solve it, they refer to an engineer.
